What the heck has happened to seven mile beach?

It's been a few years since I visited Grand Cayman. The last time I was here was before Covid. Usually we stay at the Marriott this time however we splurged and stayed at the Ritz. Thank god we didn't stay at the Marriott though there's zero beach there and it looks terrible. Needless to say we will never be staying at the Marriott again unless they're able to get their beach back. Literally that whole stretch of beach from where Marriott is located to where Royal Palms used to be has disappeared. It's crazy I've never seen anything like it.

You're absolutely right about that and it's sad to see that this has happened. I know that there are some talks about beach replenishment projects but nothing that has officially kicked off yet. Surely the impact of this to the Marriott, other hotels in the area and the short term rentals has been devastating.

It’s been a problem that really started to become more and more of an issue in the last 2-3 years. Beach erosion is a natural thing and it happens all over the world. In many other places the beach will naturally replenish itself due to tides and currents. Here in Cayman though what I’ve heard happens is that when the sand is displayed it often makes its way to the Ed’s of the shelf. Just outside of our coastal waters is a 5k foot drop l. So you can imagine that if the sand makes its way there it’s gone forever. That’s why a beach rejuvenation project or some means of continually replenishing the sand it critical. Otherwise give it another 10-20 years of doing nothing at all and there will be no 7 mile beach whatsoever!

It's pretty bad and yeah particularly where the Marriott is located. Real shame as the beach here used to be great 😥
